Luxury Apartments in the West End, Lincoln

Carruthers Court is a luxury 22 bed apartment scheme in the residential West End area of Lincoln. The scheme was developed on an urban infill site which was previously home to a garage on a prominent corner plot.

The main objective was to design a modern development which sat comfortably alongside the neighbouring 19th century terraced housing, whilst providing luxury apartments to local residents in the city centre.

The materials used on the project were sensitively chosen to suit the local vernacular. Two types of red brick were utilised as well as traditional slate for the roof in keeping with the neighbouring properties. The prominent curved elevation on the corner was given more prominence with a white rendered finish.

The scheme delivered a contemporary residential development within a predominantly late 19th century environment. The apartments are comprised of 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, and the development required careful planning to establish a strong sense of place and reflect the local surroundings and materials.

The 3-storey design conceals the third floor within a mansard roof to reduce the visual mass of the building. Broken ridge lines, projecting oriels and subtly staggered facades facilitate the structure, and are to be interpreted as a series of individual two-bay dwellings.

The inner courtyard utilises projecting balconies featuring side mounted glass balustrades with silver stainless top-rails that provide residents with much needed privacy to neighbouring dwellings.

As part of a committed and dedicated design team, strong collaborations and shared expertise ensured delivery of the best possible solution to bring the upmost benefit to the environment and surrounding community.

Stem Architects collaborated with contractor Lindum Construction to achieve this development and championed local companies from the surrounding area, ensuring the project aided in enhancing social value.
