Sheridan Close

Challenge:

Stem successfully achieved planning on an existing House in Multiple Occupation to provide shared supported accommodation for up to 9 adults, to form 16 independent residential units of accommodation with private facilities to better respond to the needs and aspirations of those seeking move-on accommodation/transitional accommodation. The proposals aim to expand the existing provision within the building, but also to prepare residents for more independent living with private residential accommodation.

Solution:

The existing building was constructed in the 1930s and is designed in the arts-and-craft style; this is replicated across neighbouring buildings on Sheridan Close. It was therefore considered that the best approach would be use the existing vernacular of the property; including external materials, detailing and construction elements, to replicate the character across the proposed design. The proposed extensions appear as a natural extension to the existing building, within areas of the existing site that are suited to development.

Conclusion:

Stem’s design results in 16 no. residential apartments to be used as move-on/transitional accommodation for YMCA Lincolnshire. This replaced 9 no. existing bedrooms within the existing property which are currently used for a similar purpose but are in need of refurbishment. The extensions to the existing property have been designed intentionally to reflect the scale and appearance of both the existing building and neighbouring similar buildings. In doing so, and being sensitive of the street scene, the result is a development which will be in keeping with it’s surroundings and considerate of the existing building.
