Challenge:
The RNN Group required a design that best utilised the existing space and extension in conjunction with a new external goods lift to provide access for materials to the workshop spaces. RNN wanted to provide level access into both sections of this floor; thus dramatically improving accessibility to both machinery and goods. The extension was to be located within an existing courtyard area used as car parking for the college campus and help preserve the use of the building for the future.
Solution:
The first floor was split into two levels, therefore the proposals aided in providing level access into both sections of this floor; thus dramatically improving accessibility. The extension will result in an additional internal area of approximately 54 square metres comprising of the lift shaft itself and lobbies providing access from the lift to various workshop spaces. The proposed extension will be clad in two different cladding materials, providing contrasting textures as well as breaking down the mass of the extension into three distinct elements.
Conclusion:
The Construction Centre houses a level for carpentry and joinery as well as a floor for brick work. Each floor houses both practical spaces and classrooms for theoretical study. There are spaces for students to ensure they can change into the correct uniform required for a construction site as well as showers and toilets. This has given RNN the opportunity to bring their construction students up from our Rawmarsh Road centre and facilitate the teaching of all of our Rotherham College students on one site, as well as bringing engineering, construction (plumbing, electrical, brick, joinery and carpentry) together so that all students can benefit from the wider facilities within the College as part of their immediate surrounding.
