Challenge:
Stem designed a unique incubator for growing local businesses on land originally utilised as railway marshalling yards. An emphasis was placed on using local materials, resulting in a sustainable ‘green’ enterprise zone.
Solution:
Mirroring the campus’ bold new social hub and educational buildings, we designed each space to be stacked in a four storey slate clad box which is punctuated by cantilevered cartridges. Moreover, the building has a number of visible sustainable design features including a Sedum ‘Green’ roof incorporating wind cowls, photovoltaic panels and overhanging pods that provide solar shading to the south-facing façades.
Conclusion:
Sparkhouse is now Lincoln’s first BREEAM excellent rated building, investing over £1m back into the local economy. Exceeding the requirement of sustainability, all materials used in the building’s construction are locally sourced and the building has been designed to be fully recyclable.
