Engine Shed, University of Lincoln

Client

Lincoln University

Challenge:

The University of Lincoln required a dynamic, striking design whilst sensitively restoring the internal historic parts of the existing building. The university required a building that made a bold statement that has the purpose of attracting new students to the expanding Lincoln University Campus. The brief was for multiple uses including student’s union and Lincoln largest live music venue.

Solution:

The striking design includes a red rectangular symbol that protrudes from the floor to ceilings curtain walling that spans the entirety of the building. This was adapted from the original engine shed that was the only surviving four-track, dead-end railway building in Lincolnshire. Due to this being an entertainment facility, specially designed acoustics were paramount to encapsulate and enhance the sound for live performances.

Conclusion:

A 1500 capacity state of the art entrainment facility with a modern dynamic colour scheme was created. The vibrant interior teamed with the historic structures of the building provides a unique environment that acts as the social hub for the city. The majority of the internals were salvaged and restored to reveal their true character that results in marrying together traditional and contemporary design.
