Nine Elms Skill Centre, Lambeth College

Client
Lambeth College

Challenge:

Lambeth College was split over 3 sites: Brixton, Clapham and Vauxhall. Having contributed to the overall estates strategy Stem helped to identify the opportunities at Vauxhall. The biggest challenge for the project was to assist the client in the decant of staff and students from Vauxhall to temporary accommodation in the other campuses.

Solution:

During the early stages of the design process, much consideration was given to the possible reuse of the buildings at Vauxhall but due to their dilapidated state, presence of asbestos and warren, maze like configuration the decision was taken to completely redevelop the site maximising land value. The income generated could help to fund the creation of state of the art facilities in Construction Engineering, Electric & Green Technologies, Digital Technologies, Hospitality & Catering, Dentistry, Science & IT.

Conclusion:

Stem Architects engaged major stakeholders including prospective employers and government bodies to identify best practice, skills shortages and future trends. This helped to provide a design for a sustainable world-class specialist educational facility with a focus on construction, hospitality and science, in conjunction with a new 184 key training Hotel and provision of strong public realm spaces with safe pedestrian routes.
